The Internet company Yahoo admitted having suffered the theft of up to 450,000 names and passwords of email from an "old file", after a group of hackers published data on a publicly accessible web.

"We confirm that an old archive of Yahoo! Contributor Network, which contains approximately 450,000 names and passwords themselves and other companies, was put in danger on 11 July," said a company spokesman, Stacey Liou.

The company did not report the case of a robbery at the global or the accounts of the countries concerned, and said investigations were continuing.

The company estimates that computer theft affects less than 5% of users with valid passwords.

In a statement, Yahoo says it is working to determine the involvement of the entry in the private data, change the passwords of users of Yahoo and notify affected companies which users have been exposed.

Although it is difficult to access for ordinary Internet users, a group of hackers published in the public domain some of the data. Hackers claimed in the domain that is a wake up call to denounce the weak system of data protection in one of the three largest companies in the world's email, as detailed in U.S. media specialized technologies.

Yahoo, through its spokesman, asks its users to change their passwords to prevent complications and consult the safety tips posted on their websites.

Yahoo is one of the three giants of global electronic mail, along with Google's Gmail and Hotmail signature of the multinational Microsoft.

A month ago, the leak of passwords professional network LinkedIn triggered the fear of other sites that the keys of its users were pirated. In 2011, PlayStation Network also suffered a pirate attack, which showed the vulnerability of some of the information users share with each other in the network.
