Part of the Forest Service mission is to protect over 193 million acres of forests and grasslands from wildfires.
Much of the firefighting work of the Forest Service is done on a seasonal basis. During the peak fire season months of May to September each year, the Forest Service hires over 12,000 seasonal civil service employees whose primary mission is to work in the areas of fire suppression, fire lookout (people who work in remote towers where they watch for and report fires) and recreation.
If you’ve searched for job opportunity announcements on the Office of Personnel Management’s USAJobs website – you may wonder why we have so many different locations. This is because the forests and grasslands we protect are spread across 1300 locations in the United States and they are cumulatively the size of Texas.
This hiring effort could not be accomplished without the use of open continuous job announcements. These announcements allow us to open one job announcement that allows applicants to apply one time for multiple locations in the United States instead of having to apply multiple times.
Without this flexibility, the Forest Service would never be able to hire thousands of employees simultaneously to protect one of our greatest national treasures – our Forests.
