Health risk assessment (HRA) is a methodology which estimates the impact of environmental pollution on the health of the exposed population.
This methodology makes use of the attributable risk as a way to illustrate such an impact. In this study, the level of environmental pollution is estimated by modeling emissions from potential sources of emissions and their atmospheric dispersion and by conducting actual ambient air monitoring for fine particulate matter (PM) in 6 sites in Metro Manila and Antipolo to validate the air dispersion model.
The attributable risk is estimated as the attributable number of ill health cases due to air pollution based on the baseline morbidity and mortality rates using exposure-response coefficients developed from daily time series studies done elsewhere and the annual exposure levels. In addition to estimating the attributable risk, standardized morbidity and mortality ratios (SMR) were also calculated.
These SMRs are used to show evidence of relationship between air pollution and health in Metro Manila. Thus, the SMR analysis helps in constructing a full depiction of the health impact of air pollution in Metro Manila.
